“What does SEO cost?” is the first question in almost every intro call in Vienna, and “it depends” helps nobody. Here are the numbers I use myself when I plan a budget for a business in Vienna: market prices from public sources, my own model, and the cases where SEO is simply not worth the money.

For context: I am an SEO freelancer in Vienna working with small and medium-sized businesses. The market figures below are not gut feeling; they come from the current Austrian price guides by Herold, Nexora Digital and Angelstone. Where the sources differ, I give the range.

In short: what SEO costs in Vienna in 2026

All three sources land in similar territory. For a local business in Vienna that wants to be found in its district and on Google Maps, serious work starts at around €500 a month. If you want visibility across Austria or the DACH region, expect €1,000 to €3,000. In contested fields such as law, finance or real estate the threshold is higher.

Three price tiers the Vienna market knows in 2026

€500–1,500

Local (district, Google Maps)

Practices, trades, gastronomy, salons, service providers with a regional catchment. Focus: business profile, technical basics, a few strong pages.

€1,000–3,000

National (Austria, DACH)

SMEs with a larger market, B2B, online shops with a manageable range. Focus: content build-up, structure, links.

€3,000 +

Contested (law, finance, real estate)

Industries where competitors have invested for years. Little moves here without ongoing content and link building.

Monthly guide values net of VAT, summarised from Herold, Nexora Digital and Angelstone (as of 2026).

The hourly rates behind that: €80 to €180 per hour for qualified SEO consultants and agencies in Austria. Freelancers mostly sit at the lower end, established agencies in Vienna and Graz at the upper end. That says nothing about quality and everything about structure: an agency’s price includes office, project management and sales; a freelancer’s does not.

What the price is made of

“SEO care” is not a product but an umbrella term. Comparing only the monthly price means comparing apples with oranges. It makes more sense to look at four blocks separately:

Block Market price in Austria What you should get for it
Audit €450 (freelancer) to €1,500–5,000 (agency) Technical basics, content, local signals, competitors. A prioritised list, not 60 pages of screenshots.
Setup €600 to €3,000 one-off Google Business Profile, technical fixes, structure, first pages, Search Console, tracking.
Ongoing work €500 to €3,000 a month New content, reviews, links, position tracking, one report you understand.
Content (extra) €150 to €600 per page or article Research based on real search queries, text, structure, images, proofreading by a native speaker.

I deliberately leave link building out of the table. For local businesses in Vienna it rarely returns what it costs, and purchased link packages do more harm than good. A mention in a district newspaper or from a partner is worth more than a hundred directory entries.

Three ascending golden steps symbolising the three SEO price tiers
Three steps, three budgets: local, national, contested. Most Viennese SMEs stand on the first one.

Freelancer, agency or do it yourself?

The honest answer depends on the size of the project, not on the price. All three routes work when they fit the situation:

  • Freelancer (€80 to €120 per hour, ongoing work from about €500): one contact who does the work personally. Fits local and mid-sized projects where speed and direct contact matter.
  • Agency (€120 to €180 per hour, ongoing work from about €1,500): a team with project management, an editorial desk and holiday cover. The right choice for large websites, several countries, many stakeholders, or when you need round-the-clock availability.
  • Do it yourself (€0 plus your time): realistic for the Google Business Profile and simple content. Technical work, structure and strategy usually still need someone who does this every day. How to set up the profile yourself: Google Business Profile Vienna: set up in 30 minutes.

What I charge in Vienna

So the numbers above do not stay abstract, here is my own model. I work as an SEO freelancer from Vienna, with no office and no team that needs to be kept busy, and I pass that on in the price:

  • SEO audit: €450 fixed. Technical basics, content, local signals, business profile, competitors in your district. Credited against the first month if we continue.
  • Setup: €600 to €900 one-off. Profile, technical fixes, first pages for the most important queries, Search Console.
  • Ongoing work: from €600 a month. Month to month, no minimum term. One report a month you can read without a glossary.

What that means in practice and who it fits is on the SEO freelancer Vienna page. If your project is bigger than one person can carry, I say so in the intro call; a larger structure is then the better choice.

When SEO is not worth the money

SEO is no cure-all, and I do not sell it to everyone. In these cases I advise against it or recommend a different first step:

  • You need inquiries this week. SEO needs two to three months for stable results. For short-term goals Google Ads is the faster channel; the trade-off is explained in SEO or Google Ads in Vienna.
  • One-off campaign. An event, a season, an opening. No point building something that only kicks in after months.
  • Nobody searches for it. New products or very narrow niches often have no search volume. Then the best page achieves nothing.
  • The website cannot be changed. Closed builders without access, franchise rules, no approval for content. Then the website comes first, SEO second.

Warning signs of cheap offers

The Vienna market also has offers that look cheap on paper and get expensive in practice. How to recognise them:

Six warning signs

  • !“Complete SEO care” under €300 a month. At normal hourly rates that is less than three hours of work. Something is not being done.
  • !Guaranteed position one. Nobody controls Google. Whoever promises it, promises it for keywords nobody types.
  • !Link packages at a fixed price. 100 links for €200 come from networks Google recognises. Your domain carries the risk.
  • !12-month minimum term from day one. Commitment is only fair once results are visible.
  • !Reports without inquiries. Rankings and visibility indexes are intermediate values. What counts in the end is calls, forms, bookings.
  • !No access to your own accounts. Search Console, business profile and Analytics belong to you. Always.

How to plan the budget in three steps

  1. Audit first, number second. An audit for a few hundred euros shows whether your problem is technical, content or the business profile. Only then can a monthly budget be named seriously.
  2. Three months as a test window. Count on the setup plus three months of ongoing work, for a local business in Vienna roughly €2,500 to €5,000 in total. After that window you can see in Search Console whether impressions and inquiries move.
  3. Compare against the cost per lead. If you know what an inquiry costs you through Google Ads, you have your benchmark. The lead cost calculator gives a first estimate for your industry.

Frequently asked questions about SEO costs in Vienna

What does SEO cost in Vienna per month?

Serious ongoing work in 2026 costs between roughly €500 and €3,000 net per month. Local businesses start at €500 to €1,500, SMEs with a national market at €1,000 to €3,000, contested industries above that.

What does an SEO audit cost?

From about €450 with freelancers, usually €1,500 to €5,000 with agencies. What matters is not the size of the document but whether it ends in a prioritised list you can work through.

Is a freelancer cheaper than an agency?

Usually yes, because no office and team costs are included. Cheaper does not automatically mean better: for large, multilingual or highly contested projects an agency with a team is often the right choice.

How long until SEO works?

The Google Business Profile reacts within days. Classic search results need two to three months for stable changes and around six months for significant ones. Anyone promising faster is usually selling something else.

Can I buy SEO by the hour?

Yes, for specific tasks such as a technical fix or a consultation. For systematic build-up a monthly model is almost always cheaper because the work becomes plannable and nobody has to watch the clock.

All prices are guide values net of VAT, as of 2026. The market ranges come from the linked sources, my own model from my price list.
